Reconstructive Surgery for People with Spinal Cord Injury
The Journal of Neurophysiology recently published a review by Adenike Adewuyi, MD PhD — a 2022 graduate of Shirley Ryan 汤头条app’s physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program — and her mentor, Colin Franz, MD, PhD, physician-scientist, at Shirley Ryan 汤头条app. The review defines a clinical framework for evaluating patients with spinal cord injuries to determine their candidacy for nerve transfer surgery.
Research Project

COMPLETE: Power Forward Study: A Cross-Sector, Multisite Clinical Trial of a Powered Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis
The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of using the Nomad P-KAFO in people who have had a musculoskeletal or neurological injury that has affected their ability to walk.
Research Project

Assessment of a Microprocessor Ankle for Low Mobility Individuals with Amputation: Phase I
This study is being done to conduct a preliminary investigation into a new prosthetic microprocessor controlled ankle, called the Damping, Stiffness, and Repositioning (DSR) ankle. Participants will visit the Shirley Ryan 汤头条app 10-16 times over 9 weeks, each visit lasting approximately 3 hours, to perform a series of walking and mobility tests with both their own prosthetic ankle and the DSR ankle.
Research Project

Breathing Low Oxygen to Enhance Spinal Stimulation Training and Functional Recovery in Persons with Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: The BO2ST Trial
The goal of this double-blind, placebo-controlled, block-randomized clinical trial is to investigate the efficacy and potency of daily acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) combined with transcutaneous electrical spinal stimulation (tSTIM) and skill-based walking practice.
Research Project
Neuromuscular mechanisms of specific trunk interventions in children with cerebral palsy
The goal of the proposed study is to examine the neuromuscular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effect of hippotherapy and determine whether repeated exposure to a pelvic perturbation force would be effective in improving trunk postural control and gait of children with cerebral palsy. This study is supported by NIH/NINDS, 1R01NS115487, Date of Project Period: 03/01/2020-02/28/2025
Research Project

Novel tools for in vitro electrophysiology and neurotrauma modeling
We aim to create new technology and techniques for studying physical and neurological trauma, using sensors, heaters, LED and arrays.
Research Project

Modeling effects of common genetic polymorphisms on peripheral nerve injury recovery
Every year, over 200,000 Americans sustain a peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Although peripheral nerves have the ability to spontaneously regenerate, 90% of PNI patients do not regain full motor function. Despite ongoing research, the main treatment for peripheral nerve injury—surgery— continues to be performed without the assistance of any medication or other therapies to enhance the rate of axon regrowth.
Research Project

Electrical stimulation and Botox combination therapy to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration after injury
This project combines two treatments for advancement in peripheral nerve injury to regenerate damaged tissues with Botox and eSTIM.
Research Project

Real Time Control of a Powered Prosthetic Leg Using Implanted EMG Signals with Sensory Feedback
We will conduct a first-in-human clinical trial to evaluate the effect of incorporating intramuscular EMG signals (obtained using a fully wireless implantable system), compared to surface EMG signals, on function ambulation and non-weight-bearing control of a powered leg prosthesis.
Research Project

Intuitively Controlled Virtual Reality System to Treat Phantom Limb Pain
We will develop a commercially viable VR rehabilitation system (called the Coapt PLP Management System) which can be deployed at home or in-clinic for individuals with upper or lower limb amputations.
Research Project

Clinical Trial: Intuitive Control of a Hybrid Prosthetic Leg During Ambulation
A lightweight powered prosthesis with a safe, intuitive control system.
